This is a very well rounded camera with a lot of features form 8 frames per second to 4k video recording to great high ISO. Of course it all comes at a cost but I say beginner because a $1,200 starting point for someone looking to get into their first DSLR is not that far off. Of course it’s subjective but in my experience selling cameras I think $1,200-$1.800 was a sweet spot for many people.

I decided to take this camera into a situation that would push it’s abilities pretty far. An old arena with terrible lighting along with tennis which is a fast moving sport. I wanted to see how the ISO would handle the need for faster shutter speeds as well as how it handled tracking focus.

The Nikon D850 is one of the most well rounded DSLR Cameras Nikon has ever made. It has me questioning wether or not the Nikon D5 is even needed at this point. Of course the D5 has it’s place but with what the D850 offers, it will be hard for many photographers to justify the extra expense over the D850.

Not only does this camera do extremely well with portraits, it’s amazing for landscapes, nature, sports and more. Yes, this is even a great camera for sports because it shoots right out of the box at 7 frames per second and with the added grip and Nikon D5 battery it will boost you to 9 frames per second.

Beyond all the functions it serves for stills, it will allow you to shoot 4K UHD full frame video. This means all your wide angle lenses are exactly as they should be, wide. The only drawback to video with Nikon is the continuous auto-focus is not very good and pretty much useless.

One thing you will need to keep in mind is if you’re shooting 14 bit uncompressed RAW, each NEF file will be close to 100 megs in size. Yes you have the option to shoot RAW Medium or compressed files but I personally rather shoot the best file possible in almost any situation. Now I can see why someone shooting weddings would choose to shoot the party photos in RAW medium to save on some space.

The question I posed in the title is a legitimate one. Is the D850 better than the 5D Mark IV, Nikon D5 and the Sony A7R II? I think in many cases yes. I am going to make a comparison video putting them all head to head to help you determine based on specs which might be the best one for you.

The first thing I want to say is DO NOT CHEAP OUT on the memory cards you put in your camera. You spend all this money on a camera, the last thing you want to do is use a cheap, slow card that may fail and lose all your images.

How do you know which memory card is right for your camera? There are a dew different types of cards on the market. SD, Micro SD, Compact Flash, XQD and CFast. They all have different speeds at which they write data as well as read data. The cards will vary in price as well.

My response to that is cool, can you tell the EVF that you want to capture motion blur but keep the subject sharp? No, you can’t. Unless you understand the exposure triangle, it will be much harder to get the perfectly exposed shot even with the EVF when trying to capture motion blur.

Just because you can turn a bunch of dials and the EVF will show you the “proper exposure” doesn’t make you a smart photographer. You have to learn the fundamentals and basics before you’re a smart photographer.
