To be honest I always made sure my camera was pointing out so if a foul ball comes off to the side that it would hopefully hit the lens and not me.An image like this is not easy to capture. You have to somehow have your timing be spot on and your camera capturing the right amount of frames in hopes that you get the ball on the bat. This is where something like a mirrorless camera could possible make shots like this much easier being that they shoot at 15 or more frames per second.
I will be working on the head to head between the two lenses in the next month. I want to make sure to take my time and do these reviews right.

Settings wise when you have to take into consideration that you may be shooting at 6.3 if you are zooming which means you need to bump your ISO in order to give you a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the action. This is one of the issues with slower lenses like this, you have to bump the ISO and in low light situations you’re going to have to push most cameras to their limits. Beyond that you aren’t able to get the smooth buttery bokeh as easily with lenses like this. More in the future.

If you are new to the RAW Edit series it’s where Adam Lerner and I take one file and we both edit it in our own way. At the end we put our final edits together and compare what we like or don’t like from our edits. This time around Adam did a complete portrait retouch in Lightroom showing you exactly how to smooth out the skin, make the eyes pop and much more. His edit starts at 8:18 of the video.

The great thing about photo editing is that it is pretty subjective. We all have different styles and one edit may appeal to one person where the other appeals to another. Editing is subjective and also an art form that takes a lot of practice to even scratch the surface with.

Photo editing is so subjective, it’s like peoples opinions and we all know what opinions are like. We all have a style, we all have a way of getting to the final image. Some people start with pre-sets, others like me like to move sliders and see the results and others take a more regimented approach.

This photo is of my friend who was in town and in need of a few photos for a book. He mentioned the images would all be black and white and showed me the style that the other photographer had already shot for others.

I am sure some of you out there are wondering my thoughts about following what someone else had done for other photos. I had no problem trying to give Shannon what he was looking for. If that meant doing something similar to someone else’s style so be it.

When it came to editing this photo I knew I would go right to black and white. I ended up doing something different with this photo when editing. I recovered a lot of the highlights using the highlight slider which is something I don’t generally do. The reason I don’t normally do it is it tends to make the photo look fake. In this case I was very happy with the results.

I thought split toning would be a good idea but after I finished making the video I went back to my standard black and white edit. There was something about the split tone that was putting me off. I say it all the time, if you need to pull all the stops to make the image better there is something wrong. In this case I felt like I should go back to the original black and white and live with it.

After my Google Meetup in Israel which saw 200+ readers show up I wanted to capture a group photo. Lucky for me Benjamin Von Wong was on the trip with us and is a master at figuring out how to light in difficult situations.

Ben spent the better part of an hour trying to figure out how he was going to capture such a large group photo. I put my full faith in him to figure it out and he knocked it out of the park.

He used the large windows running across the front of the building as fill light. He set up two of his Broncolor’s, one bouncing into the ceiling from the front and the BIG ONE in the center of the photo behind my head. His idea was to have me stand up on some thing and have the big flash light up the Fro from the back.

Mind you we only had a few minutes to take this photo. Ben took the first few but handed it off to someone else so he could join in the photo below.

Now that we have this RAW file I thought it would be fun to share it with you guys as a DNG to see how you would edit it in Adobe Lightroom. Will you crop it like Ben’s edit which is posted below? A lot of people like to see how I edit the file so I went ahead and did what I think is an edit I am happy with. Yes I BOOMIFIED it slightly and tweaked a bunch of other settings. Like with any form of art, editing is subjective and subject to personal preference. Some people like softer images, others like them to be more boomey and others are just wrong, jk jk.

A few months back I was asked to join Matisyahu in the studio to capture some candid images. I have not been able to share any of the images until they have been officially released.

Now that Matisyahu is using this image as the featured image and profile picture on his fan page I can share it with you.

Instead of just posting the final image with a watermark as a low res I decided to do something different. I am giving you all the RAW File to tweak edit and print any way you would like. Please keep in mind that I own this image and I am giving you permission to use for personal use only. Do not try to sell or put your name on the image.

Why was I being lazy you may ask? There was a beautiful sunset in Philly and I decided to go up on my roof to capture a photo of the skyline with the best camera ever, the iphone 5. Sure you can get some okay results with it but I was not happy with myself for being so lazy.

I ran down my spiral staircase, grabbed the D4 and 70-200 and hustled back up on the roof. The light was changing fast and I was able to snap off a few shots before the sun fully set.

I was so happy with the results and even more happy that I stopped being lazy and decided to grab the D4.

I have uploaded the full res jpeg for the world to print and use for personal use only. I have also uploaded the RAW file as a DNG for you all to edit any way you would like. *CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE RAW FILE*

I had only had this camera for a week before I took it onto a paying job. The only way to really test this camera out is to use it and use it on real jobs.
