During his remarkable life, Yousuf Karsh, who was born in Armenia in 1908, traveled the globe to photograph subjects ranging from historical figures to anonymous farmers to steelworks. Karsh: A Biography In Images is a full revision of the 1996 60-year retrospective of his work and brings that popular catalogue back into print in an affordable paperback format. This new edition covers the photographer’s career with greater breadth than its previous incarnation, adding works from his early experiments and his photojournalism commissions in Canada. Karsh’s reputation as one of the most sought-after portrait photographers of the 20th century is well established. A roll call of his subjects is a veritable who’s who of the modern age–Winston Churchill, Jacqueline Kennedy, Pablo Picasso, Walt Disney, Elizabeth Taylor and Albert Einstein, to name just a few–and this book features many of these figures, in some of the most recognized images of our time. But added to the portraits are a number of lesser-known or previously unpublished photographs–early figure studies, atmospheric views of the Ottawa theatre and scenes of wheat fields, city streets and factories across Canada. With its long autobiographical essay and extensive captions for each photo, many of them new to this edition, Karsh: A Biography In Images is both an elegant celebration and an indispensable overview of a life lived in photography. Yousuf Karsh passed away last year.

In 1966, during a brief stint as a receptionist for Town and Country magazine, Linda Eastman snagged a press pass to a very exclusive promotional event for the Rolling Stones aboard a yacht on the Hudson River; her fresh, candid photographs of the band were far superior to the formal shots made by the band’s official photographer, and she was instantly on the way to making a name for herself as a top rock ’n’ roll photographer.

Description From Amazon: Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window comes to mind when looking at Gail Albert Halaban’s book of photographs of city dwellers peering into their neighbors’ windows, Out My Window.

The photographs capture the vast city landscape, and within the landscape, floating high above the ground, are portraits of strangers caught in private moments.

These beautiful color pictures of voyeuristic architectural landscapes capture both the intimacy and remoteness of life lived in the proximity of so many strangers.

This is a very NSFW Photo Book. It is one of the largest and heaviest photo books I have on my shelf with a ton of nude photos. This work is not for everyone but may be a worthwhile look at fine art nudes from a time past.

Words from Amazon:

Helmut Newton’s SUMO published by TASCHEN has been judged the Best Book on Photography Published in 1999 by world-renowned International Center of Photography.

SUMO, the biggest and most costly book ever produced, was judged best in a field of outstanding photography books published in the last year of the 20th century. Conceived as a monumental tribute to Helmut Newton, arguably the most influential and controversial of contemporary photographers, SUMO has become a star in its own right by winning this honor in a field filled with worthy books devoted to photography.” –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Contact sheets are on their way to becoming a thing of the past. It’s possible they already have been forgotten or never even thought of by new photographers. I love seeing contact sheets as they show you every picture that was taken on a roll. You can see the bad photos next to the good photos next to the great photos.

I spent hours in the darkroom studying my contact sheets and deciding what I will print next. I shared them with friends and teachers to see what they thought, we passed them around on the light table and we ultimately made a decision as to what we would print.

I ordered this book because it is made up entirely of contact sheets from old movie sets. They may not be the most famous images in the world but it gives you a look inside of a world that most people have never seen.

Click Here to purchase this book on amazon. http://amzn.to/1UbWei0

Description from Amazon:There is a voyeuristic thrill in contact sheets, the direct prints used by photographers of the pre-digital age to edit their work. You look directly through the photographer’s eyes as each photo gets closer to that perfect shot. And yet, it’s often the photos not chosen that best capture the true spirit of their subjects and the life they lead after the director yells cut.

This was never truer than in the classic Hollywood era, where behind-the-scenes photos were carefully vetted for marketing purposes and unapproved shots were never expected to be seen again.

Hollywood Frame by Frame presents hundreds of never-before-published photos from the sets of some of the greatest films of the twentieth century. Hollywood’s biggest stars are caught with their guard down behind the scenes of movie classics from Some Like It Hot and Breakfast at Tiffany’s to Taxi Driver and The Silence of the Lambs. A treasure trove for any fan of Hollywood’s Golden Age, this rare glimpse of the unseen silver screen will intrigue even movie buffs who think they’ve seen everything.

When I purchased this book I was unaware that it was a final book in a three part series. I was really surprised with the type of images I found when I started turning the pages.

There are some very over the top images that do push the limits which there is absolutely nothing wrong with. This is fine art photography and you’re either going to get it or your not but don’t bash it if you don’t get it.

My recommendation for this book is if you love fine art high concept with a lot of perversion it’s for you and you will love it. If nudity and grotesque images are not your thing I would steer clear of this one.

Click here to purchase on Amazon http://amzn.to/1Cr3cFB

Description form amazon: LaChapelle Heaven to Hell is the third volume in an exhilarating trilogy that began with LaChapelle Land (1996) and continued with the infamous Hotel LaChapelle (1999). Packed with astonishing, color-saturated, and provocative images, those titles both became instant collector’s items and have since gone through multiple printings.

Featuring almost twice as many images as its predecessors, LaChapelle Heaven to Hell is an explosive compilation of new work by the visionary photographer. Since the publication of Hotel LaChapelle, the strength of LaChapelle’s work lies in its ability to focus the lens of celebrity and fashion toward more pressing issues of societal concern.

It’s one thing to to everything I listed above but to do it time and time again with the biggest names in the world from celebrities to politicians to musicians and athletes is astonishing.

This is a large hardback book that is selling for just over $80 but I can tell you that it is one of the favorites that sits on my shelf. If you love portraits or you simply love photography this book is a must have.

Description from amazon: Building on the success of his previous titles, Close Up and Identical, Martin Schoeller’s momentous Portraits is cause for celebration.

The illustrious photographer’s full range of expression is on display in this unprecedented gathering of editorial images. With an impressive amount of variety and scale,

Schoeller shares his signature compositional imagination alongside the wry wit that animates his work. Whether portraits of political leaders, Hollywood stars, business entrepreneurs, or contemporary music royalty, these images are as daring as they are exacting, playful and precise.

Regardless of the subject and setting, Schoeller’s photographs seemingly come to life. This is flat out one of the greatest collections of images I have ever seen. The quality of this work is mind blowing.

I can not imagine what it would have been like to set out on 30 different trips across a 10 year period to capture the images that it comprises. The pure quality of the black and white images leaves you to scratch your head and ask how in the world did he capture such thick blacks and consistent tones.

If you have room on your bookshelf and this book fits, I highly recommend studying it.

“In GENESIS, my camera allowed nature to speak to me. And it was my privilege to listen.” —Sebastião Salgado

On a very fortuitous day in 1970, 26-year-old Sebastião Salgado held a camera for the first time. When he looked through the viewfinder, he experienced a revelation: suddenly life made sense. From that day onward—though it took years of hard work before he had the experience to earn his living as a photographer—the camera became his tool for interacting with the world. Salgado, who “always preferred the chiaroscuro palette of black-and-white images,” shot very little color in his early career before giving it up completely.

Isn’t all access what we all want? I know I love getting all access to places that other photographers don’t get access to. The one thing you never will mow until a much later time is if you have all access to history.

In this case Photographer Doug Menuez worked his way in to get all ACCESS to some of the tech visionaries of our time. He was there with Steve Jobs as he started NEXT, he was there with Intel founders as well as many other companies that we all know by name today.

When I looked at the photos in “Fearless Genius” I sit there in awe of the access and history that he made with his images. I get asked all the time what inspires me or what do I do when I am in a photographic rut? The simple answer is I look at photo books and instantly find inspiration.

Book description from Amazon, Click Here to purchase: An eye-opening chronicle of the Silicon Valley technology boom, capturing key moments in the careers of Steve Jobs and more than seventy other leading innovators as they created today’s digital world

In the spring of 1985, a technological revolution was under way in Silicon Valley, and documentary photographer Doug Menuez was there in search of a story—something big. At the same time, Steve Jobs was being forced out of his beloved Apple and starting over with a new company, NeXT Computer. His goal was to build a supercomputer with the power to transform education. Menuez had found his story: he proposed to photograph Jobs and his extraordinary team as they built this new computer, from conception to product launch.

As many of you know, I LOVE HOCKEY. Hockey was the first professional sport I ever photographed and had a credential to shoot. Starting at 17 years old I was a credentialed photographer shooting the Philadelphia Flyers for a local publication called “Fan Magazine”.

The Hockey Book is one of those books that Sports Illustrated cultivated with what I think is the best collection of hockey images ever. My favorite part of the book is not only reading about the history of the sport but seeing images from the early days of it. Seeing images from the 40s in Detroit and seeing chicken wire up instead of glass is mind blowing.

“From its earliest days on frozen ponds, hockey has been a sport of speed and elegance, but also one demanding courage and physical will. The Hockey Book goes deep into the heart of the game, celebrating with astounding photographs and insightful words the great players and the inspiring teams, as well as an ethos-robust and selfless-that defines the sport as much in its dynamic present as it did in hockey’s hardscrabble (and helmetless) past.”

This has to be one of the most interesting and all around cool books I have seen. It’s like a popup book accept many of the items can be removed.

You have old news paper clips that have been reproduced. You have lyric sheets that look like they are hand written on lined paper, you have all tour posters. The quality and detail of the information that was included in this thing is pretty mind blowing.

If you can still find one of these books new I highly recommend you pick one up.

When I first started to collect photo books to study I came across “Moments, the Pulitzer Prize Winning Photograph”. The book that I am reviewing here is only updated to the early 2000’s but there are newer releases that continue with the winning images.

This is one of the most powerful collection of images I have ever seen. The moments that are captured are beyond the most powerful things you have seen. You see life, death and everything in between. You are left to read into the images and I found myself being put into some of those situations. This book takes the extra step of adding the stories behind the images which puts everything into perspective for you.

This is not an easy book to look at. When you come up to photos of executions or right before executions, I can’t help but wonder what is that person thinking at that moment. What is anyone really thinking when any of that is about to go down.

A moment captured in a photograph is so much more powerful in many situations than video because it freezes a moment and leaves your mind to figure out what is going on.

With any prize that is given you may find yourself trying to figure out how certain images won. I wonder myself about some of the images but we always have to remember that photography is subjective.

I highly recommend this book for the pure history that it captures. The stories are powerful and moving as well are the images. This is a book I think ever photographer needs to see, even if you head to a book store to flip through it.

Here is the books description from Amazon.

The most arresting photographic images in our history-all the way up to the World Trade Center tragedy and the 2002 war in Afghanistan-come to life in this complete compilation of Pulitzer Prize-winning news and feature photos, along with the stories behind them.
More than 235 prize-winning photographs offer a year-by-year, dramatically visual chronicle of our times. Each beautifully reproduced image is accompanied by key information on how the shot was taken and the stunning story behind it, as told to author Hal Buell by the photographers. An accompanying timeline, placing each photo in its historical context, features yet another 265 photographs.

This unique and moving volume is completely up to date, including the 2000-2001 winners. Recent photos include images of students fleeing Columbine High School and the striking shot of federal agents taking Elian Gonzales from the arms of his relatives at gunpoint.
