The reason I made this video is so you don’t make the same mistake I made when purchasing a teleconverter as a beginner photographer. I couldn’t afford another lens but though I could spend $125 and double my focal length without a problem, and get the same quality. I was dead wrong. There’s been so much bitching and moaning about gear lately. I keep hearing thing like “the dynamic range sucks” “there’s not enough focus points” “this camera is a def don’t buy”. The problem is, it’s not the gear, it’s you. If you can’t take a quality picture with todays modern gear there’s a problem and it’s not the camera.

Yes, I review gear and talk a lot about gear. But I always come back to it’s the photographer not the gear. And yes, gear can help make a better photographer even better because they know what they’re doing.

Firefly Music Festival has posted for sale the ability to shoot from the pit for $500!!! Let me be clear, this is for as they call them “super fans” to get this once in a lifetime experience.

Right before I was about to film this video the page with the offer changed the wording. The original text was

“Get access into one of the most exclusive areas of the festival grounds – the photo pit. You will be escorted by an official Firefly photographer, given a professional camera, and allowed to take photos of your favorite Firefly artist from the photo pit* (with an asterisk). After the show, we will edit your photos for you and the best of the bunch will be featured in our post-festival albums. Enough BITCHING people. It’s not the year that’s the problem–it’s you. It’s your mentality; it’s your complaining and inability to take action. Does it suck when a well-known person dies? Of course. But people are dying every day all over the world, many who go unnoticed by the masses. Just last week, a family I have known for a long time lost their 26-year old son to cancer. That hits close to home. So young, so sad. They are not bitching and complaining. They are picking themselves back up and continuing on.

The point of this RANT is to urge you to stop bitching and complaining and wishing the days away because you think something didn’t go well. Stand up for the stuff you believe in, take action, do something but most of all STOP BITCHING and COMPLAINING.

I’ve known Mike Kelley for a few years now from when we spent a week in Israel shooting the country. Mike was and is known as an architectural photographer who also has a LOVE for airplanes.

One day he had the idea of going to LAX and photographing all the incoming and outgoing planes for a personal project. The ensuing photo became known as “Wake Turbulence” and become a viral sensation. You can read more about Mike’s personal project right here http://bit.ly/2e1VuRq

Mike set out to create something for fun, as a personal project and it has lead to a TON and I mean a ton of new work that has in turn helped him make a name for himself in the aviation world. It’s opened many doors and lead to job after job after job.

I’ve had projects i’ve wanted to do for a long time that i’ve been putting off. I make excuses like, nows not the right time or how am I going to film it to share it with everyone when my focus should be on telling the amazing photo story first.

The moral of the story is go create something, you never know where it’s going to lead.

At a price like this I think SIGMA has a golden opportunity to release a 70-200 2.8 OS SPORT lens for somewhere around $1500. If SIGMA comes out with a SPORTS 70-200 2.8 I would have a hard time telling someone to spend $2,800 on the Nikon over the SIGMA.

I am sure this will be a sharp, fast focusing and all around amazing lens but it’s priced at a point that only the full time pros can afford.

A major design change that i’m not sure sure about just yet was the decision to move the zoom ring to where the focus ring used to be and the focus ring to where the zoom ring used to be. I have not seen another lens that does this and i’m not sure if this will be more stable / balanced or totally awkward. Only using it will determine this for me.

Will I be buying it? I want to buy it because I like to have the newest and sharpest glass possible but man oh man is it expensive. What I will say is I will be testing it and that will determine if I will replace my current one or not. On top of that we need another 70-200 in our video kit any way so…..

QUICK UPDATE: I got my hands on this lens the other day and give a few impressions.
