Welcome to another Rapid Fire Critique where I take 10 of your best images and give them a critique mc critiquerson. This time we have a sports photographer who utilizes the crop tool HEAVILY from what I can see.

As many of you know, I do not crop, that is a personal choice that goes back to how I learned in high school. I also know sports photographers, wire services, news agencies are all for cropping action shots. Is it right or wrong? Like everything else, it’s personal preference. I don’t buy into the shoot loose and crop later mentality.

How many teams do we all get stuck in the gear game thinking better gear is always the answer. This photographer broke out a 15 year old Canon Rebel XTi along with some inexpensive fast glass, great processing and ended with some solid photos.

It’s amazing how a different a photo is that captures emotion to a photo that misses the emotion all together. You have to feel the emotion and capture it, if you miss it, you’re photo may be bla. It also doesn’t hurt if you’re able to compose an image well either. If you capture emotion and have a solid compost-ion there’s a great chance you will capture a nice image.

It’s your job as a photographer to direct the model how to pose. Not every model you work with will be a professional who simply knows exactly what to do in front of the camera.

For this critique the photographer has their exposure and composition down but they need to do a better job of directing the models on how to pose and relax in front of the camera.

I know some people will get upset that I say the secret to photography is better glass. The truth of the matter is better glass certainly helps. Some people will say “but not everyone can afford better glass”, I get that. But the quicker you can get into faster the glass, the quicker you will see a difference in your photos.

I have no problem with people being in auto when they are starting out. But at some point you need to take the plunge at get out of auto and take control of your own photos. You will end up taking just snapshots if you stay in auto. Sure every so often you will get a good photo but you have no idea how you got it. GET OUT OF AUTO DAMIT!!
